The specification
What a Canadian Passport photo has to be
Every figure below is quoted from the issuing authority, and the source is linked at the bottom of this section. Where the official sources do not agree, we say so instead of picking one.
| Photo size | 50 x 70 mm · 2 x 2 3/4 in |
|---|---|
| Head height | 31–36 mm (1 1/4 – 1 7/16 in) from chin to crown. Digital renewal: chin-to-crown is 45%–50% of the photo height. |
| Eye position | Not published officially: we verify it against your consulate at the session. |
| Background | Plain white or light-coloured, uniform lighting, no shadows, glare or flash reflections |
| Glasses | Non-tinted glasses allowed if there is no glare on the lenses. Sunglasses and tinted lenses are not acceptable. |
| Expression | Eyes open and clearly visible, looking straight at the camera, mouth closed, not smiling or frowning |
| How recent | Taken no more than 6 months before you submit the application |
| Digital file | Online renewal only: .jpeg or .jpg, 3:2 aspect ratio, portrait orientation, 1800x1200 px minimum, 4500x3000 px maximum, 200 KB – 5 MB. Cannot be a scan of a printed photo. |
| Copies needed | 2 identical and unaltered photos |
Note on the size50 mm wide by 70 mm high. Unique, no other document we shoot uses it, and no US drugstore prints it by default.
What gets photos rejected
The things that actually fail
Not general advice, just the specific traps in this document’s own rules.
- The back of the photo is part of the requirement. The photographer must stamp or handwrite the date taken and the studio name and complete address. Stick-on labels are explicitly not acceptable: it must be stamped or handwritten.
- Your guarantor then writes "I certify this to be a true likeness of [name]" and signs.
- The same 50x70 mm size and back-of-photo rule applies to the Permanent Resident card.
- A self-service kiosk or a phone app physically cannot satisfy this: there is no studio name and address to stamp.
