The official sources disagreeUSCIS publishes its detailed photo-instruction pages behind bot protection, so several fields (head height, glasses, expression) have no machine-readable official statement. USCIS also issued a "Photograph Reuse for Identity Documents" policy alert in December 2025 that we could not retrieve. We shoot USCIS work to the State Department 2x2 standard and confirm the current form instructions with you at the session.

The things that actually fail

Not general advice, just the specific traps in this document’s own rules.

The 30-day window is the rule people get wrong. A photo that is perfect for a US passport is stale for USCIS after a month.
Photos must be printed on thin paper with a glossy finish, un-mounted and un-retouched.
Naturalization applicants must sign each photograph on the front, in English, without obscuring facial features (8 CFR Part 333).
