The specification

What a UK Passport photo has to be

Every figure below is quoted from the issuing authority, and the source is linked at the bottom of this section. Where the official sources do not agree, we say so instead of picking one.

Photo size35 x 45 mm · 1.38 x 1.77 in
Head height29–34 mm from the crown of the head to the bottom of the chin
Eye positionEyes must fall in the top 40%–70% of the photo: HM Passport Office publishes an explicit vertical eye band, which most countries do not.
BackgroundThe public guidance says plain cream or light grey. The current Photo Standards document (v51.0, March 2026) broadens this to any plain light colour.
GlassesBoth eyes must be clearly visible. Glasses must come off if they cause glare. No sunglasses or tinted lenses.
ExpressionPlain expression, mouth closed. Rejected if the expression changes the shape of your face: a wide smile, a pout or a frown all fail.
How recentTaken within the LAST MONTH. This is the tightest recency requirement of any passport we shoot.
Digital fileMinimum 600 x 750 px. Between 50 KB and 10 MB.
Copies needed2 identical printed photos
The official sources disagreeTwo official gov.uk pages give different background guidance: the 2015 printed-photo page says cream or light grey, the March 2026 Photo Standards v51.0 says any plain light colour. We shoot to the narrower, older wording so the photo passes under either.
Note on the size45 mm high by 35 mm wide.
What gets photos rejected

The things that actually fail

Not general advice, just the specific traps in this document’s own rules.

  • The one-month rule catches almost everyone: a photo taken for another document five weeks ago is already invalid.
  • The explicit eye band (top 40–70%) means correct head height alone is not enough; the head has to sit at the right position in the frame.
  • UK passport and UK visa photos are different documents with different rules. See the UK visa page.
Reserve a time

Hold a time, and it’s yours.

Live availability straight from our studio calendar. A reserved appointment is $200 and always includes both the digital file and your prints. Same-day times show here when we have them.

Get it right the first time.

We shoot it, check it against UK Passport’s own specification, and you leave with a photo that passes. If it is ever rejected, we reshoot it free.
