What a India OCI Card photo has to be

Every figure below is quoted from the issuing authority, and the source is linked at the bottom of this section. Where the official sources do not agree, we say so instead of picking one.

Photo size	not less than 51 x 51 mm · 2 x 2 in
Head height	80% coverage of the face: a percentage-of-frame rule, not the visa’s 25–35 mm measurement. Front view of head and shoulders, face in the middle of the photograph.
Eye position	Not published officially: we verify it against your consulate at the session.
Background	Plain light colour, and the OCI portal states explicitly "(not white)", without a border.
Glasses	Not published officially: we verify it against your consulate at the session.
Expression	Not published officially: we verify it against your consulate at the session.
How recent	Not older than 6 months
Digital file	JPEG/JPG, square. The three official documents give three different limits: 900x900 px / 200 KB (OCI portal), 1500x1500 px / 500 KB (VFS instructions), 900x900 px / 30 KB (VFS checklist). We deliver a file that satisfies all three.
Copies needed	Two recent photos, plus the identical digital upload

The official sources disagreeThe government OCI portal says the background must NOT be white; one VFS checklist says "white / plain light (pale)". The portal is the issuing authority, so we shoot to a light non-white background. The three official digital limits also conflict: we target the intersection.

What gets photos rejected

The things that actually fail

Not general advice, just the specific traps in this document’s own rules.

The background must not be white: the exact opposite of the Indian visa rule, and the same applicant often needs both. Bringing one photo for both applications fails one of them.
The physical and uploaded photograph must be identical.
The photo must not be stapled and must carry no signature on it.
A signature image is uploaded alongside and is bound by the same format and size caps.
