The specification
What a Australian Passport photo has to be
Every figure below is quoted from the issuing authority, and the source is linked at the bottom of this section. Where the official sources do not agree, we say so instead of picking one.
| Photo size | 35–40 mm wide x 45–50 mm high · 1.38–1.57 x 1.77–1.97 in |
|---|---|
| Head height | 32–36 mm chin to crown |
| Eye position | Not published officially: we verify it against your consulate at the session. |
| Background | Plain white or light background that contrasts with your face |
| Glasses | Not permitted unless medically necessary. A medical certificate or B-11 form is required for any guideline exception. |
| Expression | Neutral expression, eyes open, mouth closed, for anyone aged 3 and over |
| How recent | Less than 6 months old |
| Digital file | Not published officially: we verify it against your consulate at the session. |
| Copies needed | 2 good-quality photos |
Note on the sizeA RANGE, not a fixed size: unusual, and it gives some latitude the other standards do not.
What gets photos rejected
The things that actually fail
Not general advice, just the specific traps in this document’s own rules.
- The print process itself is specified, and it is the strictest of any document we shoot: dye sublimation, explicitly NOT from an inkjet printer, on heavy-weight glossy paper of at least 200 gsm.
- That single rule disqualifies most home printers, most office printers and a lot of drugstore kiosks regardless of how good the photograph is.
- No retouching, no shadows, no reflections, no tilted head. Hair must not obscure the edges of the face.

Other documents we do
Get it right the first time.
We shoot it, check it against Australian Passport’s own specification, and you leave with a photo that passes. If it is ever rejected, we reshoot it free.
